Kisah Gelang Kristal, Jed dan Double Demerit

This week is a long weekend here, Saturday and Sunday, followed by Monday as a public holiday. And whenever there’s a stretch like this, the double demerit rule comes into effect.  

So, what is double demerit?.   Kisah orang kawin dua ke?.  Bukan ye.  Hihi.

Ok…It’s not the kind of “double” you’d celebrate, like double cheese burger or a double scoop of ice cream, but double traffic penalty points. Normally, forgetting your seatbelt would cost three points, but during this period it jumps to six. The message is clear,  with more cars on the road, safety is non-negotiable.

This morning I took a walk along to Scarborough Beach. The promenade was lined with its usual stalls, many selling jade and crystals. In Malaysia, these stones have only recently made a comeback, but here in Australia they’ve been around for years. I remember spotting them back in my student days, sometimes even as preloved pieces, which always felt a bit like a treasure hunt.

It makes perfect sense, really. Australia is blessed with natural gemstones, world-famous opals from Coober Pedy, sparkling amethyst, quartz, turquoise, and plenty of earthy stones locals love to turn into jewellery. So while cristal or jade may feel like a fresh trend back home, here it simply sits alongside a long tradition of crystals and gems.
